Position Summary:
The Histotechnician – Lab is responsible for preparing tissue samples for microscopic diagnosis through grossing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. This position demands a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality to ensure precise diagnostic results.
Essential Functions:
To perform effectively in this role, the candidate must fulfill the following duties with or without reasonable accommodations:
- Perform technical procedures for tissue sample preparation and slide production, including grossing, embedding, microtomy, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry staining, ensuring diagnostic quality and accuracy.
- Strictly adhere to laboratory protocols and procedures to uphold quality standards.
- Maintain laboratory equipment in optimal condition, monitor functionality, and promptly report issues or deviations to laboratory management for resolution.
- Identify and communicate technical or logistical challenges to laboratory management to enhance overall laboratory operations.
- Assist with the proper disposal of hazardous chemical waste, following regulatory guidelines and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Provide assistance with additional laboratory tasks to support workflow and operational needs.
- Uphold organizational standards for data security and confidentiality in all laboratory processes.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
The qualifications below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for this role:
- 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology or science courses.
- At least 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 in biology, and 12 in a combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology.
- Associate degree in chemical or biological sciences or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
- Completion of 60 semester hours (or equivalent) from an accredited institution, including:
- A minimum of one year of experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory is preferred.
- Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
